Journal It!

"Looking for a new way to improve active language skills on your own? This simple method can help."

While passive skills build your vocabulary and confidence, active skills get you the biggest bang for your buck. Reading and listening may not be as challenging as speaking and writing, but it can actually help you improve your communication skills more. Think of riding a bicycle without training wheels, or driving to a destination without Google Maps.

How to Practice Speaking and Writing with No Audience?

During the pandemic we most certainly will not be able to practice our language skills by traveling to a foreign country in the way we could before, practicing our choppy French by chatting with the cheese shop owner. Nor will we be enjoying language classes nestled together in the comfy classroom.

Consider journaling. Just writing for 10 minutes first thing in the morning or evening will allow you to practice and seal in the grammar and vocabulary you have been studying in a creative and natural mode of communication in the safe haven of your very own journal. Yes, you will make mistakes. You can try to correct yourself by reviewing grammar tenses or checking spelling or vocabulary to prevent bad habits. Or not. The important thing is that you establish a regular habit of writing regularly, which will reinforce your learning and most certainly improve your fluency. Happy journaling!
