Two Tips for ESL Writers

Updated: Apr 7, 2022

"These two important tips can help Non-native English speakers improve their writing."

Non-native speakers often have a misconception that they must use BIG words when they write. Some employ them out of excitement or passion about using a newly acquired word, others because they feel it gives their writing more credibility. To both I say keep to what you know and keep your writing simple. Especially if English is your second language, using words you have a good handle on is more effective than using a BIG word which you do not yet completely understand. Words have nuances and uses even beyond the boundaries of their own definition, and it takes many exposures to fully comprehend the meaning of a more abstract word.

The second bit of advice I would give to a non-native English writer is to use the least number of words possible. Be economical. Be frugal. Using more words increases the chance of your making a mistake and of being less understood. If you want to be more creative, I recommend doing so with the content of what you write not how you write.
